How to Measure for Artificial Turf

Accurate measurements help you order the right amount of turf and avoid unnecessary waste. This guide explains how to measure your space, calculate square footage, and understand how roll width and layout affect your final order.

What You Will Need

Before you start, gather a few simple items so you can measure accurately and keep track of your numbers.

  • Measuring tape
  • Paper or notes app
  • Calculator
  • Photos of the area
  • Rough sketch of the layout
  • Marker or stakes, if measuring outdoors

How to Calculate Square Footage

For a square or rectangular area, measure the length and width in feet, then multiply them together.

Formula: Length × Width = Square Feet

Example: If your area is 20 feet long and 15 feet wide: 20 × 15 = 300 square feet

This gives you the basic area, but the final turf order may be affected by roll width, seams, layout direction, and waste allowance.

For Square or Rectangular Areas

    Measure the longest side

    Use a measuring tape to get the full length of the space in feet.

    Measure the widest side

    Measure the full width of the space in feet.

    Multiply length by width

    Length × Width = Square Footage. This is your base estimate.

    Add a waste allowance

    Most projects need some extra material for trimming, edges, and cuts. Add 5–10% for simple shapes; more for curved or angled areas.

    Review the roll width

    Standard roll width is 15 ft. Your layout may need to be adjusted to minimize seams and waste.

Why Roll Width Matters

Artificial turf is sold by square footage, but the product comes in fixed roll widths. This means your final order may not match your exact measured square footage.

Example: 15-foot roll width × 20-foot selected length = 300 square feet. If your project area is 260 square feet, you may still need a larger piece depending on the shape and layout.
